Are you feeling stuck in your current situation? Do you feel like you need a fresh perspective to approach problems and solutions? In this episode of “MultiFamily AP360,” I interview Billy Keels, a seasoned traveler who has visited 86 different countries. Keels shares how his travels changed his perspective and helped him develop a “beginner’s mindset” that allows him to approach problems and solutions from different angles.
Keels shares his background, including growing up in the Midwest and being the first person in his family to attend college. After working in the corporate world for five years and not getting the dream job he wanted, Keels took a one-year sabbatical that led to him traveling and working in 58 different countries. This experience opened his mind to different perspectives and ways of approaching problems. Keels has now traveled to 86 different countries and lived in three different European countries for the past 22 years.
Keels discusses his journey towards achieving financial independence through real estate investing. He admits to making many mistakes along the way, but emphasizes the importance of learning from them and not repeating them. Keels explains how he initially invested in mutual funds and individual stocks, but eventually realized that he had no control over these investments. He then turned to real estate investing, which allowed him to create cash flow, build equity, and lower his taxes. However, since he was living in Barcelona at the time, he had to invest long distance in the United States. To do this successfully, he built a strong team around himself, including individuals who handled operations, underwriting, tax strategy, legal advice, and branding and marketing.
Keels emphasizes that building a strong team is critical to success in real estate investing. He also talks about how he helps high-income earners keep more of their income through investing in the energy sector, specifically in oil and gas. Keels emphasizes the importance of knowing oneself before deciding to be an active or passive investor and the value of competent professionals in managing investments.
Keels also shares his life motto of “don’t wait, take action” and the importance of a morning routine in setting the tone for the day. Finally, Keels encourages listeners to make choices and live their choice, and to leave honest reviews and ratings for the podcast.
Keels discusses two important decisions that impacted his life. The first was his choice to take a one-year sabbatical to Paris in 2001, which eventually led to the birth of his two sons. Although it was a tough decision, Keels is glad he made it and encourages others to take risks and step out of their comfort zones. The second decision was reading the book “The Creature from Jekyll Island,” which changed his understanding of the world and the money system. Keels recommends this book to anyone looking to expand their knowledge and open up new opportunities.
If you’re looking to expand your knowledge and gain a fresh perspective, I highly recommend listening to this episode.
